(Saving
my Edges)
Now
that I have my drawing transfered over, I start defining my edges
with a white pencil to save my lines. I keep my pencil sharp.
As I do this, I tap out some of the graphite pencil with a soft
kneaded eraser. This prevents my colors from becoming muddy from
graphite smudges. I also take this time to work in my highlights.
I use a soft touch in areas where the line will later be covered
over with another color. I keep my initial sketch on hand for
reference because some of the details get lost during transfer.
After my white lines are in place and I've removed as much of
the graphite as I think necessary, I softly put in some of the
shadow areas. This is just to nail down where my light source
is going to be coming from so I don't make a mistake later on.
At this point I've begun making a decision on my background values
and colors, too.
